More than 1,400 people braved frigid temperatures Friday night, February 27, to help Lifespace co-present the Iowa premiere of the acclaimed documentary “Glen Campbell … I’ll Be Me,” the story of the music legend’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Lifespace began working with LeadingAge Iowa and WesleyLife last fall to bring the ward-winning film to Iowa after team members viewed it at the LeadingAge 2014 annual meeting in Nashville.

The film’s director, James Keach, and Campbell’s wife and two of this children, Ashley and Shannon Campbell, attended the Iowa premiere at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, taking questions from the audience following the screening.

Ashley and Shannon, performers in their own right, closed the evening with a half-hour concert featuring covers of their father’s hits as well as their own material. Ashley Campbell recently signed a recording contract with Dot Records, and her first single, “Remembering,” which she performed, is a tribute to her father.

“Alzheimer’s disease affects so many of the seniors and families we serve that we wanted to help bring to light the effects of the illness and the need for increased and consistent awareness,” Lifespace president and CEO Sloan Bentley said. “It’s staggering to think that by the year 2050, barring the development of medical breakthroughs, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease could reach 16 million. We all have a responsibility to do all we can to become informed and shed light on the need for more research.”

The movie will be shown for a week in Des Moines beginning March 22 at the Fleur Cinema and Café. For information on movie times, visit Fleur Cinema. View the movie’s official trailer here.
